Longitudinal Geo-Coded U.S. Phonebook Data Platform
Summary
This technology delivers precise historical insights and enhanced data accessibility through a digitized, geocoded, and longitudinally linked dataset of U.S. businesses and households from 1920 to 1980, enabling comprehensive urban economic, environmental, genealogical, and commercial analyses at a scale beyond manual abstraction.
The Unmet Need: Limited access to structured, historical establishment-level data impedes economic and environmental analysis
Historical establishment-level data essential for urban economics, environmental due diligence, real estate analytics, and genealogical research remains largely inaccessible in unsearchable page-image formats; current datasets either lack temporal granularity or fail to provide geocoded, longitudinal linkage, constraining detailed historical and spatial analyses. Existing census data is typically decennial and coarse, while scanned directories are annual but not structured or searchable, creating a critical data gap for research and commercial applications.
Emerging trends toward digitization, machine learning, and geographic information systems are generating opportunities to convert historical records into high-resolution, searchable, and integrated datasets, facilitating data-driven decision-making in multiple economic and environmental domains and enabling historic longitudinal studies previously unattainable.
The Proposed Solution: Digitized, machine-learning-enhanced geocoded dataset spanning multiple decades for searchable, linked establishment-level historical data
The technology constitutes a large-scale, geo-coded panel dataset derived from scanned U.S. telephone directories spanning 1920 to 1980, mainly covering 30 metropolitan regions and hundreds of cities, with approximately 500 million digitized records of businesses and households. Custom machine-learning models, incorporating optical character recognition, entry-box detection, and named-entity recognition, processed raw Library of Congress scans to produce structured CSV outputs, including detailed spatial coordinates from ArcGIS. Unlike existing datasets, it offers annual resolution, comprehensive spatial linkage, and longitudinal tracking of entities over time. While OCR and parsing residual errors are reported, the data pipeline significantly improves accessibility to granular, mapped, and queryable historical records, supporting diverse analytical contexts such as urban economic dynamics, environmental due diligence, real estate appraisal, and genealogical research.
