ARL in Chicago? Nucleation and Growth of an “Open” Extended Model for Defense Science and Technology

The US Army Research Laboratory’s (ARL) mission is to discover, innovate, and transition science and technology to ensure dominant strategic land power. The ARL is the nation’s premier laboratory for land forces, carving out the science and discoveries that will make today’s Army obsolete. So what does that mean? What kinds of research does the Army need for the future? What sorts of programs are we pursuing and how do we interact with other academic institutions, industry, and other government agencies? This talk will discuss the US Army Research Laboratory and its recent venture in to the greater Chicago region, termed ARL Central. ARL Central is motivated by the “Open Campus” initiative, a new business model for building an integrated work environment with academia, industry, and government, thus fueling innovation through cooperative R&D collaboration. ARL Central will establish an ARL presence in the greater Chicago region in Hyde park in collaboration with the University of Chicago's Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation to jointly solve the Army’s technological needs; to establish close ties with academia, industry, and other government agencies; to access the large pool of subject matter experts in the region, and to hire from the talented ecosystem with regional preferences. Learn about ARL, ARL Central, and where materials research fits into future Army science and technology.

This event is hosted by the ASM International Chicago Regional Chapter, which is the local chapter of the ASM International materials science professional society. This event is one of ASM Chicago’s monthly technical talks. At this event, Dr. Mark Tschopp of the Army Research Lab will be speaking at the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) on Goose Island. Registration is required and this event is open to the public.

Cost: $30 cash or check, free for students and K-12 educators.
