Slideflow Labs: Transforming Disease Diagnostics with AI-Driven Biomarker Discovery
Slideflow Labs is a participant in Cohort 4 of Transform, a data science and AI startup accelerator powered at the University of Chicago’s Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Innovation in collaboration with the Data Science Institute.
Slideflow Labs is on a mission to revolutionize disease diagnostics through an innovative, AI-driven approach to biomarker discovery. With a team of physician-scientists and technical experts, the company is addressing significant challenges in pathology to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.
The team’s combined expertise spans both clinical oncology and machine learning technology, which positions them uniquely in the medical technology space. As CEO James Dolezal explains, “Our goal is to make diagnostics faster, more efficient, and ultimately more affordable, by automating the complex processes involved in biomarker development. AI allows us to analyze vast amounts of data and produce results that are not only accurate but also actionable, enabling clinicians to make informed decisions more quickly.”
The company is tackling long-standing issues that have plagued pathology-based biomarker development, including high costs, slow turnaround times, and inefficient manual processes. Traditional approaches often fail to integrate molecular and genetic data with histological samples, making it difficult to draw meaningful insights for personalized treatments. Dolezal adds, “Historically, pathology has been a bottleneck in cancer diagnostics, but our platform enables us to streamline this process, providing a more comprehensive view of the patient’s condition.”
What sets Slideflow Labs apart is their ability to integrate local deployment options with their AI-powered tools, ensuring that healthcare systems maintain control over their data while benefiting from cutting-edge technology. Their platform is designed to be cost-effective and accessible, supporting low-cost, fully integrated hardware configurations for healthcare settings. This combination of local data ownership and advanced AI capabilities offers significant advantages in a field that is increasingly reliant on digital solutions.
“We’ve focused on building a platform that not only meets the needs of healthcare providers but also respects the privacy and security of patient data,” said Dolezal. “We believe this approach will help democratize access to advanced diagnostic tools.”
In the near term, Slideflow Labs plans to expand its offerings by completing its web interface and cloud integration, launching pilot programs with biotech, pharma, and healthcare partners, and beginning the regulatory compliance process with the FDA.
By participating in the Transform Accelerator, Slideflow Labs is tapping into valuable mentorship, networking opportunities, and computational resources that will help fuel their growth. The program provides access to a network of potential investors, partners, and clients, which the team is eager to leverage as they continue to innovate and scale. “The support we’ve received from the accelerator has been invaluable in helping us navigate the complex landscape of healthcare technology,” said Dolezal. “We’re looking forward to the opportunities ahead.”
