Soujanya Bhumkar, ’99, was most recently vice president, global partnerships and head of mobile and communications partnerships at Yahoo! Inc. He was previously CEO of Cooliris Inc., a company that developed photo viewing products on mobile, web, and desktop platforms, which he co-founded in 2006 and was acquired by Yahoo in 2014. Prior to Cooliris, he co- founded Vazu and Tamarind. 

Michael Farb, ’09, is chief revenue officer of Blue Star Sports. He was previously COO of CaptainU, a leader in athletic development and recruiting software for athletes, clubs, events, and colleges. He co-founded the company in 2008 with Avi Stopper, ’06, and in December 2016, Blue Star Sports acquired CaptainU. 

Mehul Nariyawala, ’05, was most recently a product manager at Nest Labs (a Google company). He joined Google in 2013, when Google acquired Flutter, the company he co- founded in 2010. Flutter offered an app that allowed users to control their computers by hand gestures in front of a laptop's webcam. 

Vishal Sharma, ’98, is CEO of Wand Labs Inc., a California-based mobile application software developer. He developed the company in 2013 to integrate services into the chat experience. In June 2016, Microsoft announced that it acquired the company. He previously served as VP of products at Google from 2006 to 2013.

About: Now in its sixth year, the Polsky Accelerator has become well-known for the strong portfolio of companies it has helped (over 50 teams) – including notable alumni such as BallotReady, Moneythink, and ZipFit Denim. Alum companies have raised more than $10 million in funding – with three companies having been acquired (HireBrite, matchist, and SmartLine). The 2017 Polsky Accelerator teams will receive a $10,000 investment from the Polsky Center, and all be headquartered at the Polsky Exchange.

The Polsky Summer Accelerator accepts 10 teams to work with each summer in structured and concierge programming. Additionally these teams receive funding, office space at the Polsky Exchange, access to Polsky Center staff, coaching from faculty, and mentorship from alumni entrepreneurs and Chicago-area investors to help them overcome many of the hurdles to launching a business.

About: The Polsky Incubator is a program for ambitious startups that are built to scale quickly. We’re looking for exceptional teams with the commitment and skills to solve an important problem for a large number of users. If you have a prototype built, a team in place, and you’re ready to run, we’d love for you to apply. Our current cohort includes teams from across Chicago as well as UChicago alumni.
Getting to work with and learn from other committed, full-time entrepreneurs is the most important benefit of the Incubator. In addition, the Incubator program includes monthly cohort-only workshops, preferential access to expert office hours, and regular goal-setting and accountability meetings with program staff. Companies also receive dedicated office space and legal support from the UChicago Law School Innovation Clinic.

UCIE Academic Year internship program for startups and UChicago students

About: This program offers a subsidy program for students that intern at a startup company during the academic year. Through this program we ask that the employer pay a $1,000 stipend for the academic quarter. This is modeled on an average internship of 10 weeks/10 hours per week/$10 per hour. In exchange, the College entrepreneurship program will pay a stipend for the next internship.  This can be for a second intern, or a continued internship (same student, in Fall and then Winter quarter).

About: Offered in partnership with the Private Equity Institute at Oxford University, the Oxford Chicago Global Private Equity Challenge is a case competition exclusively designed for Chicago Booth and Oxford University students. The Challenge enables teams from both institutions to assess the potential for a leveraged buyout of a publicly-listed company and compete for a cash prize. It consists of two rounds: a semifinals event at Chicago Booth in early December and a finals competition in early March. About: Come watch the top teams from Chicago Booth compete for a spot in the regional VCIC. Real-world entrepreneurs will pitch their businesses, and the MBA student teams must determine which company they would like to mock invest in. Each team will draft a term sheet, and will present their investment terms to the panel of VC judges. The top two teams will actually negotiate that term sheet with the entrepreneur they have selected to invest in.
